A
trip to Menorca need not be just a sun sea and sand type holiday,
although if that's what your after you've made a good choice.
Away from the beach there is plenty to see and explore, like
the water-front cave bars at Es Castell where you can relax
and enjoy a meal or a drink, and the harbour at Fornells where
you can sample locally caught fish and lobster, in some of
the best (and most expensive) seafood restaurants on the island.
Driving around Menorca is easy, the roads are mostly quiet
except for maybe Mao & Ciutadella at peak times. It's
almost impossible to get lost as there is one main road running
the length of the island. With most of the resorts found along
roads branching off this. The island's resorts and beaches
are sure to appeal to anyone that enjoys swimming, snorkeling,
water-skiing, windsurfing and boating, or even lounging around
digging sand castles. Most are on the south coast. Sub aqua
is available at quite a few resorts on the island as is tennis,
horse riding, and many other sports. A 9 hole golf course
is situated on the north coast at Son Parc.
Floating
in the Mediterranean between Spain and the North African coast,
the strategically developed Balearic Islands are invaded every
summer by a massive multinational force of hedonistic party
animals and sun seekers, as well as a few quieter folk. This
is hardly surprising considering what's on offer: fine beaches,
relentless sunshine, good food and wild nightlife.
What
is surprising is that, despite all this, the four main islands
- Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera - have, to a degree,
maintained their individuality. Beyond the bars, beaches and
24-hour parties are Gothic cathedrals, Stone Age ruins, fishing
villages, spectacular bushwalks and endless orchards of oranges
and olives. Tourism hasn't completely consumed these delicate
remnants of Eden ...yet.
